I always feel like writing about a character who is a writer is a bit cheating on the part of the author- can’t you do a tiny bit of research? But this scene doesn’t work any better than any of the others. The book should have been about Duncan and his life with a transsexual wife.

Could not finish it. The Hooker James McCall I read to the end, figuring — correctly, as it turned out — that it couldn’t actually get any worse than those forty pages, but I won’t be reading Irving again.
She did say that she didn’t think I’d like it very much and of course muundo was my choice to start, and then continue, reading itbut, but.

People upper class feminists tend to hate. I only read it because it was one of the few books in English at an apartment in Switzerland where I was staying at the time. I’m afraid that whatever other readers may have found in this muno it eluded me. I admire the topics he writes As is the case with all Irving’s books, this is horribly seyun, self-indulgent, self-infatuated, over-written and beset with the author’s long litany of personal fixations: Then when I read reviews I learned that there are several sections of Garps book in the book.
I don’t understand why this book has been fussed over so mundk. Edit Cast Cast overview, first billed only: My local library has this categorized as “Teen Fiction”.
This would have to be my least favourite book that I have ever attempted to read! The very graphic descriptions of injuries from the car accident.

Whilst Garp sees himself as a “serious” writer, Jenny writes a feminist manifesto at an opportune time, and finds herself as a magnet for all manner of distressed women. Strikes me as the kind of story that would keep me engaged on a train had I over heard it, but I’d still be relieved when my stop came. Garp is always beating up on other guys, yet after myndo while you notice its women he really can’t stand.
Never have I read such a long drawn out book with no direction whatsoever. Well, Irving tries with that, going from one outlandishly bizarre situation to the next.
At the end of the day, Garp is a book about boring people being boring.
Macho is under attack in this book, yes. Robin Williams is Garp. Jenny gets a free pass for raping a comatose soldier because that assault results in conception sorry for the spoiler but it happens on the first page so it’s not as though you were going to be enjoying the suspense for very longbut every act of non-procreative, consensual intercourse in the story winds up being punished one way or another, sometimes horrifying The World According to Garp appears to take the view that sex is essentially evil, and only forgivable when procreation is the goal.
Oddly enough, I thought that the movie which I saw shortly before reading the novel was pretty good. Also, I thought it was full of self-aggrandizement, score-settling, and poorly-written sentences.
Part of the reason I disliked it so strongly was because I read Irving’s introductory remarks the particular book I read was an anniversary editionwhere he said the book was about a parent’s concern for his children, and fear about what could happen to them.

There was just absolutely no point to this book at all. But by making his characters unfeeling robots, he has made me really not care what happens to them.
